Diwali is five days, not one night
Most men plan one Diwali outfit and then spend the other four days wearing whatever is ironed. But Diwali 2026 runs from Friday 6 November to Tuesday 10 November, and each of those five days has its own mood: a market run on Dhanteras, a quiet Choti Diwali, the big Lakshmi Puja evening, an early-morning Govardhan Puja and a family lunch on Bhai Dooj.
The good news is you don't need five new outfits. You need the right three or four pieces and a plan. This guide gives you both: what to wear each day, and how to mix a small set of Jompers pieces into five looks that never repeat.

Dates follow Drik Panchang. Some regional calendars place Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj a day later, so check with your family pandit. On 8 November, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Delhi is roughly 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM, which means your main outfit needs to be on and ready by early evening.
Day 1 – Dhanteras (6 November): yellow, gold and room to walk
Dhanteras is the day for buying gold, silver or new utensils, and for the evening puja to Lakshmi and Kuber. For most men that means hours in a crowded market followed by a short puja at home. Your outfit has to look auspicious and survive a long, busy day.
What to wear: a straight embroidered kurta in yellow, mustard, cream or a soft gold, with a matching pyjama or slim trousers. Yellow and gold are traditionally linked with prosperity, which makes them the natural choice for this day.
- Pick cotton or a light cotton-silk blend; you will be walking and standing a lot.
- Keep embroidery to the neckline or placket so the kurta doesn't snag in crowds.
- Skip all-black and all-white today; many families consider them unlucky for Dhanteras.
- Wear comfortable juttis or kolhapuris, not stiff new mojaris.
Shop the look: Embroidered Kurtas in yellow and mustard, or the Jompers Men Cream Embroidered Kurta with a white pyjama from Ethnic Bottom Wear.
Day 2 – Choti Diwali (7 November): relaxed but still festive
Choti Diwali is the busiest day at home: last-minute cleaning, rangoli, putting up lights and distributing sweets to neighbours. In the evening the first diyas are lit. It is a working day dressed up a little, so comfort comes first.
What to wear: a short kurta with Korean pants, or a printed kurta with straight trousers. It looks put-together when the doorbell rings but lets you climb a ladder to hang lights.
- Choose prints or ombre shades in teal, olive or maroon; they hide dust and diya oil better than pastels.
- A short kurta is safer near diyas and rangoli than a long, flowing one.
- Save your best embroidery for tomorrow.
Shop the look: Short Kurta with Korean Pants or Printed Kurtas, such as the Maroon Ombre Printed Kurta.
Day 3 – Lakshmi Puja and Diwali night (8 November): your hero look
This is the day everyone remembers and the day every photo gets taken. It also has two halves: a seated family puja at dusk and a long night of visits, card parties and crackers. Plan one outfit that handles both, or two outfits with a quick change in between.
Option A – one outfit for the whole evening: a silk-blend or jacquard kurta in maroon, royal blue, emerald or purple with a matching Nehru jacket. Sit through the puja with the jacket on, then wear it open for the party.
Option B – two looks: a sequin or chikankari-embroidered kurta pyjama with dupatta for the puja, then swap the dupatta for a Nehru Jacket or an Indo-Western / Jodhpuri set for the party.
- Rich jewel tones and a little sheen glow under diya light; flat pastels can look washed out in photos.
- Sitting on the floor for puja? Choose a kurta with side slits and a pyjama with some stretch.
- Near crackers, avoid loose dupattas and synthetic fabrics. Pure cotton or cotton-silk is the safer bet.
- Finish with mojaris, a watch and a pocket square if you are wearing a jacket.
Shop the look: Sequence Kurtas, the Embroidered & Sequin Kurta Pyjama with Dupatta in purple, Jacquard Silk Kurtas and Ethnic Sets with Waistcoat.
Day 4 – Govardhan Puja (9 November): light, traditional, temple-ready
Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut, celebrates Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan hill. Families build a small Govardhan, offer a spread of dishes and often visit a temple early in the morning. It is also a Monday, so many men head to work afterwards.
What to wear: a white, cream or pastel chikankari kurta with a churidar or pyjama. It feels right in a temple, stays cool if you are cooking or serving the annakut, and can go straight to the office with trousers.
- Pista green, peach and soft yellow suit the morning and the Krishna theme.
- Light cotton is the best fabric for a long morning on your feet.
- Want to rewear Diwali night's jacket? Put it over this plain kurta for a completely new look.
Shop the look: Chikankari Kurtas, such as the Pista Green Chikankari Kurta, or Solids and Everyday Kurtas.
Day 5 – Bhai Dooj (10 November): smart, warm and photo-ready
Bhai Dooj closes the festival with your sister applying tilak, a family lunch and plenty of photos. It is personal rather than grand, so aim for a look that is a step above everyday but nowhere near Diwali night.
What to wear: a kurta with dupatta for a classic touch, or a solid kurta in navy, peacock blue or wine with a contrast pyjama. If brothers are dressing together, pick the same colour family in different shades instead of identical outfits.
- A collar or neckline with light embroidery frames the face nicely in tilak photos.
- Coordinate with your sister: if she wears pink or red, a cream, navy or teal kurta pairs well beside her.
- Pack the jacket: Bhai Dooj lunches often run into a cool November evening.
Shop the look: Kurta with Dupatta, the Peacock Blue Chikankari Kurta and Ethnic Sets.
The smart buy: 4 pieces, 5 Diwali looks
You can cover all five days with four pieces instead of five full outfits. Buy one rich kurta, one light kurta, one Nehru jacket and one versatile bottom, then mix them like this.
The four pieces:
-
A rich kurta – silk-blend, jacquard or sequin, in maroon, purple or royal blue.
-
A light kurta – cream, white or pista chikankari or embroidered cotton.
-
A Nehru jacket – a solid or subtly textured one in a colour that suits both kurtas (gold, beige or navy work for most).
-
A bottom – white or off-white pyjama or churidar that pairs with everything.

Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali in 2026?
The main Diwali day with Lakshmi Puja is Sunday, 8 November 2026. The five-day festival starts with Dhanteras on 6 November and ends with Bhai Dooj on 10 November.
What colour should men wear on Dhanteras?
Yellow, mustard, gold, cream and red are the most popular, as they are linked with prosperity. Many families avoid all-black and all-white on Dhanteras.
What should a man wear for Lakshmi Puja?
A silk-blend, jacquard or embroidered kurta pyjama in a rich colour like maroon, royal blue or purple. Add a Nehru jacket if you are heading to a party after the puja.
Can I wear the same outfit on two days of Diwali?
Yes. Change the layer and the bottom, and it reads as a new look. The same kurta with a jacket and pyjama one day, and with trousers and no jacket the next, works well.
What should I wear for Bhai Dooj?
A kurta with dupatta or a solid kurta in navy, teal or wine is a good choice. It is dressier than everyday wear but lighter than your Diwali night outfit.
Is it safe to wear a dupatta near diyas and crackers?
Take it off or tuck it in before lighting diyas or bursting crackers. Cotton and cotton-silk are safer than synthetic fabrics around flames.
